This 4-year project, funded by the Lake Simcoe Georgian Bay Clean-Up Fund through Environment Canada aims to evaluate on-farm horticultural wastewater discharge and treatment technologies.

Goals

Participation

  • To identify the types of contaminants, whether they are nutrients or sediments, in horticultural wastewater discharges and to determine the present levels from on-farm operations.
  • To test innovative and alternative treatment technologies and management strategies for reducing impurities at economically feasible costs.
  • To inform and educate the horticultural industry about management and technology options for wastewater treatment.
  • To create the ability within agriculture to innovate, install, and support on-farm wastewater solutions.
Growers: The current discharge from a variety of on-farm activities, including potato, greenhouse, nursery, and field vegetable washing, and watering systems, are being defined. Treatment technologies, both previously installed and new options, are being evaluated for their performance.

Researchers: There are opportunities to partner with the HMGA to test innovative systems.

Technology Providers: Contact the HMGA if your company provides wastewater treatment technologies that would be applicable in these scenarios and would benefit the farmers.
